Quadcopter ESC desync mid-flight, how to diagnose?

New build, second flight. 10 seconds in, one motor stops spinning. Bot crashes, ESC bricked.

Forum search says "ESC desync" but symptoms vary widely. My case:
  • Motor was healthy on first flight (full power tested)
  • ESC was running cool to touch before flight
  • Battery sag minimal (4S 1300mAh, 75% charge before flight)
  • No prop strike before motor dropped
ESC dead after recovery, replaced. Worried this happens again. Common root causes:
  • Bad solder joint on motor wire (mechanical fail under vibration)
  • Firmware mismatch (Bluejay vs BLHeli on different ESCs of the same 4-in-1)
  • Demag from over-current
Any FPV folks here can break down what to check before next flight?
